One person killed, another injured in Santa Clarita house fire

A bedroom fire that spread into an attic at a single-story home in Santa Clarita on Saturday killed one person and left another in critical condition, Fire Department officials said.

Firefighters were dispatched about 11:40 a.m. to the 28000 block of Flowerpark Drive and extinguished the blaze in about half an hour, according to a Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatcher.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene and another person was in critical condition, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Major sewage spill in Orange County closes beaches from Newport Beach to Dana Point

A spill of about 4 million gallons of raw sewage prompted the Orange County Health Care Agency to close ocean and bay water areas from Crystal Cove State Park in Newport Beach to Poche Beach at the Dana Point and San Clemente border, health officials said.

The spill was caused by a broken force main at the Ben Brown Golf Course in Laguna Beach, first reported at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday, the agency said.

In a statement, Nichole Quick, an Orange County health officer, emphasized that exposure to untreated sewage “can be harmful and result in very serious illness with potentially severe effects.”

Health officials said the affected areas will remain closed until water quality meets state standards.

In Los Angeles County, authorities warned against swimming at local beaches because contaminants in runoff from recent rainfall could cause bacteria levels in ocean waters to increase. The county Department of Public Health said bacteria levels could remain elevated for up to three days, depending on the intensity of the rain and the volume of runoff.

Elevated bacteria levels in ocean water may cause illness, officials said, especially in children and the elderly. The advisory for L.A. County beaches will be in effect until at least 7:30 a.m. Monday, but could be extended with more rainfall.

Diane Kruger shows rare photo of daughter on vacation with Norman Reedus

Diane Kruger admitted she has a lot to be thankful for this holiday season.

The actress, 43, shared a rare photo Thursday on Instagram of her daughter and partner, Norman Reedus, while enjoying a beach vacation.

“I know you won’t remember these walks and you won’t remember these ‘talks,’ but I hope that you’ll always remember how much you’re loved and how thankful we are to have you in our lives little one,” she captioned the photo.

“And how grateful I’ll always be to @bigbaldhead to have given me such a wonderful gift and to walk with me hand in hand ♥️ from my family to yours Happy Thanksgiving.”

Reedus posted his own family photo on his account showing a frazzled Kruger with their daughter on an airplane. “VACAY!!!” he joked.

The couple has been public about their relationship since 2017 and welcomed their daughter in November 2018 except they haven’t shared any details about her name or birth and prefer to keep it that way.

Kruger keeps her child’s face out of photographs and asked fans to do the same after paparazzi pics were taken without Kruger’s permission.

“Dear fans, dear non fans, dear paparazzi and anyone with a conscience. We were just tagged in these paparazzi pictures of me and our daughter. These pictures were taken without our consent and expose a vulnerable and innocent baby,” the “Inglourious Basterds” star wrote.

“While we understand that some people would like to see a picture of our daughter, we as parents, want nothing more than allow her to grow up in privacy and safety,” she added. “Me and @bigbaldhead would kindly ask you not to repost these pictures and help us achieve that goal.”

“Whoever has already posted them, please take them down. Please put yourself in our shoes. We are just like any parent wanting the very best for our child. Thank you for your support.”

British police are treating the incident as ‘terror-related as a precaution,’ and confirmed that one man was shot by police

Police and emergency services are responding to incident at London Bridge on Friday afternoon.

The areas on both side of the bridge are usually quite busy, with many offices, restaurants and bars nearby. London Bridge itself is one of the UK capital’s main transport hubs with thousands of people traveling through it every day. The incident took place just hours before city workers clock off for the week and head to the station for their train home.

National Security analyst Peter Bergen describes London Bridge as one of the city’s “iconic places.”

“There’s great concern about this particular location, London Bridge, where two years ago there was a terrorist incident where eight people were killed on London Bridge and at the nearby Borough Market,” he tells CNN.

“Interestingly, the British authorities had recently lowered the terrorism alert from severe to substantial — severe means an attack is highly likely and substantial means the risk is lower — so if indeed this does turn out to be terrorism British authorities will have to explain why they so recently lowered the alert to that level.”

He added: “It’s one of these iconic places in London. That could just be a coincidence, but if you want to make some sort of statement you go to these iconic places knowing it’s going to get more attention and more coverage.”

Blessing Corner feeds the needy, veterans, senior citizens on Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving is a time for good food, camaraderie and lending a helping hand.

The Blessing Corner Ministries provided all three to those in need Thursday.

Located at 101 Union Avenue, Blessing Corner served meals to benefit the homeless and less fortunate on Thanksgiving Day from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The ministry also delivered meals to senior citizens and veterans in the community.

Event Coordinator Tasha Turner said that 425 meals had been served or delivered an hour into the event and that roughly 800 would be done by day’s end. The efforts were aided by about 70 volunteers, she said.

Turner, 28, said that Blessing Corner has been doing the holiday dinner for as long as she could remember.

“We know the need here,” she said. “We’ve been here for some time.”

Her mom, Pastor Bonnie Gillette Turner, said the gathering usually brings in far more people than Thursday’s turnout. She said the rainy and cold weather may have played a factor and that more groups and organizations than ever before are doing similar events throughout the city on Thanksgiving Day.

Bonnie Turner said the ministry began handing out turkeys in 1999, only to realize those in need didn’t have a place to cook them. She then began hosting the holiday dinner.

The church also hosts meals every Tuesday and Friday, and will have a similar dinner and donation event on Christmas Day.

“We have to help them,” Bonnie Turner said. “Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks. We want to accomplish that goal with this.”

Gonsalo Cervantes said him and his father realized Wednesday night their oven wasn’t working. His dad retrieved a flier for the Blessing Corner dinner from his truck, however, and they were able to enjoy a hot meal after all.

“It’s great they do it. It means so much,” he said. “We got a true dinner. We are really appreciative of that.”

Ramiro Urena had a full to-go plate on his way out the door, which was for his wife at home.

“It’s better than being alone,” he said. “Sitting with other people, being thankful for what we have. I’m thankful for it.”

A white Thanksgiving in the high desert as snow falls in Antelope Valley and elsewhere

The Thanksgiving Day storm was producing significant amounts of snow in Southern California’s high desert region Thursday.

Up to 8 inches of snow was reported in some parts of the Antelope Valley. Over the last two days, Lancaster has seen 4 to 5 inches of snow and Palmdale 3 inches, according to the National Weather Service. The agency said a weather spotter reported 7 inches Saturday morning in Pearblossom.

Snow was falling along Interstate 15 and Highway 14, but both routes so far remain open.

Snow was accumulating in both Lancaster and Palmdale, enough to cover cars and for some to build snowmen.

Snow was also falling in some Inland Empire desert communities, such as Apple Valley and Hesperia. Temperatures in that region were hovering in the low 30s, and the snow level had dropped to under 2,500 feet as the powerful storm moved through.

The steady precipitation was expected to turn to scattered rain and snow showers by midday. Isolated thunderstorms were also possible in Los Angeles and Orange counties, especially closer to the coast.

There was a 40% chance of rain in the high desert Friday with lows in the 40s.

Michelin chef bans meat from her restaurants

(CNN) — Conversations about how diet impacts the climate crisis have ramped up this past year, with a UN report published in August 2019 suggesting that eating less meat and reducing food waste could help save the planet.

So perhaps it’s no surprise that top chefs are sitting up and taking notice, too.

Dominque Crenn, a pioneering restaurateur with three Michelin stars to her name, has announced she’ll no longer be serving meat in her portfolio of highly successful San Francisco eateries.

“Meat is complicated,” she told CNN Travel in an interview about her meat-free decision. “We have to be thoughtful about the ecosystem that we’re living in and not to destroy it because of the instant gratification and the demand of others.”

Concerned about the sometimes murky world of food provenance, Crenn decided it was easiest to remove meat from the menu altogether.

This decision didn’t come out of the blue. Crenn’s popular restaurants are known for dishing up veggie and fish-focused twists on traditional French cuisine.

“What people haven’t talked about is [since] I opened Petit Crenn in 2015, it’s been fully vegetarian and pescatarian, we didn’t have any meat there,” says Crenn. “But I never advertised it.
“And then Atelier has been meat free for the last two years.”

Crenn’s upcoming project Boutique Crenn, due to open in San Francisco’s Salesforce Tower in 2020, is set to be veggie-only, too.

As a child growing up on a farm in France’s northwestern Brittany region, Crenn was immersed in a culture where, she told CNN Travel back in 2018, there was “a lot of care and connection with the soil.”

“When I came here, it was very important to me, if I’m getting into that business, I needed to understand where the food comes from,” she adds now.

Crenn personally sources her produce, whether it’s vegetables, fish or meat. Often, she grows the vegetables on her own farm.

“I’m not a pescatarian, I’m not a vegetarian, but I’m also a conscious person,” Crenn says. “And I know the impact of the way that we fix meat nowadays is not good. It’s killing us, it’s killing the planet.”

While Crenn feels a responsibility to address the problem, she also says she’s not trying to “impose anything on anyone.”

Instead, the chef wants people to think about the consequences of their diet and come to their own conclusions.

And while Crenn sees some positives in veganism, she doesn’t intend to adopt that diet — either for herself or at her restaurants, expressing concern about the provenance of vegan products available on the market.

As for fish — well, for now, it’s still on the menu in some of her restaurants — but Crenn’s going to keep considering that choice.

“Fish also is a problem,” Crenn says. “So don’t be surprised if in a few years if I become all vegetarian.”

Supportive community

Crenn, who recently announced she is cancer-free following a diagnosis earlier this year, is known for being vocal and passionate about her beliefs.

She’s a champion of gender equality in the restaurant industry and culinary arts.

While she was honored to be named the world’s best female chef by the World’s 50 Best Restaurants List in 2016, Crenn also expressed her frustration at the fact there was a separate category for women.

The reaction to her new meat-free culinary philosophy, Crenn says, has been overwhelmingly positive and supportive.

But if any naysayers protest meat’s integral place in haute-cuisine, Crenn will shrug them off.

“The decision doesn’t come from what my guests want. The decision comes from what this planet needs. What decisions as humans we need to make for the planet to be better,” she says.

“I’m trying to make the best decision for my surroundings and the planet and myself. But I’m not forcing anybody to do that.

But what am I asking is — I really want people to think about their actions and their behavior and what they can impact on their own. And it’s pretty easy. You know, the little things will go such a long way.”
